Ethical Mogolian Cashmere | Machine Washable Cashmere
Want to know more about our cashmere? You've come to the right place. Below are the important facts you need to know about what we do and why we do it.
Cashmere fibres are the undercoat of a cashmere goat. Cashmere goats are only found in Mongolia, China and other areas around the Himalayan Mountains such as Nepal and northern India.
Mongolia has the harshest winter of all cashmere herding countries, with temperatures plummeting as low as -40C. This means that the cashmere goats grow the longest undercoats to keep them insulated. The result is the longest cashmere fibres in the world. The longer the fibres, the better the quality.
THE HERDER-GOAT RELATIONSHIP
Cashmere goat herding is at the heart of Mongolian culture and heritage. The Mongolian people are largely nomadic, travelling from one place to the next with their goat herd. When spring arrives, temperatures rise and can reach up to +40C at the height of summer. Just as the goat begins to naturally shed its coat, our herders hand comb all of their goats the traditional way.
It takes the undercoat of four cashmere goats grown over a winter to produce one 100% cashmere garment. Now that’s the opposite of fast fashion. Our cashmere fibre is bought from Mongolian herders and knitted locally in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. It is then exported straight to us and sold directly to you via our curated Pop-Ups and online. Our supply chain is fully traceable and our cashmere is only sold directly by us, no-one else.
ETHICAL AND RESPONSIBLE
As shareholders in the knitting facility that we use in Mongolia, we have full transparency regarding the environment and the working conditions of our cashmere artisans. Our facility employs over 800 artisans, offering an on-site nursery for the 80% female workforce. Other benefits include two years paid maternity leave at half pay and an opportunity for machinery to be transported to employee's houses if they want to increase income during their time away from work.
Our direct supply chain and selling model means that we can bring you cashmere at the fairest price without compromising on quality. We use only Grade A cashmere fibres, which means that our fibres are the longest and finest available. But anyone can claim that – here is the certificate from the Mongolian cashmere association to prove it.
